Dell Inspiron E1505 and 6400 Drivers XP

November 21st, 2011 by Jake in Posted in Code | No Comments »

Finding drivers for laptops can be annoying and dell’s website is useless, its either always down or under construction, I’ve gone and got my hands on a file which can solve everyones problems…

Its from the link below and works on the Inspiron 6400 and E1505 from Dell.

http://winxp76.com/Bunker/index.php?dir=Drivers/DELL%20INSPIRON%206400%20-%20E1505/

Im going to set up a mirror of the main file which can be found (here).

Download, unzip and run the main exe file. It will do a total restore for every single driver on both models of the laptop. I havent tried it on other models but if you do try and it works, post the model number and a breif description of how it went and I’ll add this to the list…

Enjoy Guys!!

The world of computing is dying

October 14th, 2011 by Jake in Posted in Brilliant, Business | No Comments »

The past few weeks has been horrible for deaths, people from the computing industry have been dying left right and center. Its really sad to see but people, go when they’re ready. It could be a long term illness or could just be their time. Either way this is very sad news. Below are some small bits of information in dedication of these industry changing, amazing people.

Sir Maurice Wilkes

Sir Maurice was the designer and creator of Edsac, a computer that ran its first program in May 1949. The Cambridge machine was the first widely-useable stored program machine and was very influential on the nascent British computer industry. It set standards for how computers should be used in academia and business that have lasted until the present day. Following work on developing radar during World War II, Sir Maurice returned to Cambridge to begin designing the machine that would become Edsac.

Dennis Ritchie

Dr Ritchie was one of the creators of the hugely influential Unix operating system and the equally pioneering C programming language. A vast number of modern technologies depend on the work he and fellow programmers did on Unix and C in the early days of the computer revolution. Those paying respects said he was a “titan” of the industry whose influence was largely unknown.

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, co-founder and figurehead of Apple, passed away just hours after the technology giant unveiled its latest product – the iPhone 4S. The launch was the first by Apple following Mr Jobs’ resignation as chief executive in August, and hence it offered a glimpse of what to expect from new boss Tim Cook. Expectations ahead of the launch had been high, with many Apple fans hoping for an iPhone 5 that would perform yet another technological leap by the nimble giant. Instead, they were served a phone that was virtually indistinguishable from the previous model, which is already 15-months-old and thus deemed ageing by many in the fast-moving world of smartphone technology.

We’re going to london! To buy a Heat Magazine!

October 10th, 2011 by Jake in Posted in Life | No Comments »

Well, we’re not really going to buy a heat magazine but im sure my girlfriend might pick one up on the train.

Either way in only 4 short days im off to london to throw down some money in retail heaven! Staying at Travel Lodge’s Waterloo Hotel which has had really good reviews, in a really good location so should be nice.

Were hitting…

  • Kensington Street
  • Kings Cross
  • Aquarium (I like fish – what?)
  • Natural History Museum
  • London Eye
  • Leicester Square
  • Blood Brothers @ The Phoenix Theatre

We’re also going to “the village” which apparently is massive. Londons not new to me at all, been there thousands of times but this time it will be nice to relax with the girlfriend and go sightseeing.

Ill be blogging and posting pictures while im up there so watch out!

Just thought I might show you all this picture I found, ticked my inner geek.

Slight adaptation on the google logo but I think people will like it.

What a difference a hello makes.

During the day, while not coding and spending time with the girlfriend, I work at McDonalds as a Floor Manager. Thats basically running an area but also overseeing crew training and career progression.

Recently I’ve been on early shifts, starting at 5am and ending at 2pm. Frequently, just because of how life works, Im usually the first person they see in the morning that doesnt know them. This morning was lovely, just by being polite, happy and welcoming it encouraged people to spend more and overlly, return with more business.

Just thinking outside the box, sometimes I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, go to work annoyed and generally take my unknown frustration out on everyone I come across. I dont know why this is but if I were to come through a McDonalds drive thru on the way to work, just being greeted in a polite and welcoming matter would cheer me up.

Just some useless ramble from me again…

Just think next time though, be nice, you could make someones day.

WordPress Development “Must Haves”

September 15th, 2011 by Jake in Posted in Code | 8 Comments »

Everyone loves coding and theres nothing better than making your own wordpress theme like a pro. People all over the forums are asking for new ways to do it and loads of people dont even know where to begin. My first piece of advice is, dont go and buy a book on it. If your really that helpless or lost, get someone online to show you or build you a simple theme. With a simple theme you can build off of it.

When I go to make a new wordpress site, I’ve got a folder full of “cheatsheets”, plugins and then finally my frame. My frame consists of

  • css
  • css/img
  • css/img/aut
  • css/img/ext
  • header.php
  • footer.php
  • page.php
  • post.php
  • sidebar.php
  • content_add.php
  • ext_lnk.php (External SEO link handler, you dont really need this but its something I build for myself and clients.)
  • comments.php
  • css/style.css
  • css/reset.css
  • css/theme.css
  • css/tablet.css (Setting the media type for “tablet”)
  • css/mobile.css (Setting the media type for “mobile”)

A very simple frame but this holds, all my syntax tags, formatting for resetting browser formalities and device changes. I plan to release this some day and just by uploading it, you can display your blog instantly with minimal styling.

Below are the links to the “Cheatsheets” that I frequently use, many people dont like the thought of having to refer to a file to code. If you think about it though, if you can code for over 20 platforms, PC, Mac and mobile devices its good to have a hard copy to refer too. These files have saved me countless hours of fretting around after 20 characters of code.

Remember though, the WordPress Codex is always free at anyones disposal.
If you liked this post, I’d appreciate a comment with your thoughts.

Top 5 Image editing programs for OS X

September 13th, 2011 by Jake in Posted in Design | 7 Comments »

As a website developer I have to work with design programs everyday. Image editing also comes into play though, frequently I get asked to edit photos for clients to place on their sites aswell as creating design.

Over the years theres been differences with the programs that have been developed. Although, the basic point of all the programs have been the same. The difference is just the workflow and layout.

For example, I personally use a mix of all five of these programs, because of the layouts and styling. All programs do the same but with small adaptations. Something I personally like is being able to move the elements panels around, to a different screen, tablet or just out of my way. I also like having two screens, one to have the task in hand live on and another one to have different elements and panels on.

  1. Adobe Photoshop CS5
  2. Adobe Fireworks CS5
  3. GIMP
  4. Pixelmator
  5. Inkscape
They’re ranked on my personal opinion on whats best for webste developers who also design.
Whats your favorite program?
